How to get heaps of digital products to sell on Craigslist

If you are not a good content creator and writer, then you should stock up on some quality “Master Resell Rights” (also called MRR) eBooks. “Private Label Rights” (PLR) is also worth a look, but you may have to put a name to the product if it doesn’t have an official author.

Either MRR or PLR will allow you to keep all the sales profit from your sales. You can find plenty of MRR and PLR to claim as your own by “Googling” those words, or even buying from the WarriorForum.com direct from product creators.

Because Craigslist is free, essentially your overheads are low, just your blog, which you can get free from Blogger.com or WordPress.com.

Warning on affiliate links

Bear in mind that you are NOT permitted to place affiliate links in your Craigslist classified ads, and your account will be closed if it is found to have an affiliate link.

Tiny.url links – banned

It is also worthwhile addressing the fact that Craigslist does not allow you to post “tiny.url” hyperlinks on your ad, and if you do, it will be closed. So any URL cloaker website tools like bud.url, tiny.url etc, will not work. You need full url addresses in your classified ads and remember to try and keep your hyperlinks to your blog or website only used on one ad in one location at a time. You can make your website link unique by adding a folder/directory extension like:

You can also create a sub-domain in your website domain:

Ad Trackers

There are a few companies now offering “ad tracking” for your Craigslist classified ad, you may want to give them a look, one is CLASSIFIED AD TRACKER. This service comes at a cost, so try with caution.

Craigslist’s “no spam” policy Vs Digital Selling

craigslist

Craigslist is a free classified ad website, where you can sell something to someone else locally in person. Craigslist is not designed to sell your item or service globally, and if you want to sell something in two locations (eg. Los Angeles and London) then you would need to actually list it separately in both areas, you can’t create one listing and have it sell in both areas (like you can on eBay).

Craigslist has a “spam filter” that may remove your ads if it believes you are trying to sell something in more than one area. Therefore, you need to list your digital products carefully to avoid the spam filters, and ensure you don’t breach Craigslist terms and conditions, whilst still achieving your digital product sales in more than one location.

Besides the spam filter, other people who view your ad can easily mark your ad as “spam” and therefore have it suspended until verified by Craigslist staff. This is very easy for people to do, and some people believe viewers have marked their listing as “spam” for frivolous reasons, like a jealous competitor, but unfortunately you still can’t do anything about this.

The key here is to keep you Craigslist ad professional, relevant to the category in which you have listed it, and not make “mass produce” it all over the different Craigslist locations around the world, otherwise it looks like spam.

There is also another problem with Craigslist that is not so well known, which is referred to as “ghosting”. This is where an ad is posted by the seller, and appears to the seller as real, but is actually not live on the Craigslist website live (ie. No one can see it except you). This is because the spam filter has marked it as suspicious, and it has to be reviewed by Craigslist staff before it is published.

How to try to avoid the Craigslist “Spam Filter”

There is a few ways around this challenge, here are the top three:

  1. Be very careful about how you actually post ads on Craigslist
  2. Insert an “image” which can be clicked on to go to your website where the buyer can purchase your digital product.
  3. Create different IP addresses and email accounts to open numerous profile accounts with Craigslist

All three of the above options are somewhat frustrating to implement at first, but if you think your digital product will sell well from Craigslist, then you should seriously consider implementing one of them to avoid your ads being “closed” by the Craigslist spam filter.

Best times to list eBay items for sale

ebay

Because your eBay listings are exactly for 3 days or 7 days, whichever you select, the auction (or listing) will end on the same time you list it, unless you “schedule” it for another time (an option that is “Free” for casual eBay sellers after 1 May 2013).

It is always best to have your auction (or listing) end at a popular time with shoppers. Many shoppers will simply search “ending soonest” in order to refine their search based on the theory that the items that are just about to end will give them a very quick result of a cheap purchase.

Most eBay customers shop between 7 and 10pm all nights, and the most popular days are Saturday and Sunday. Monday and Thursday evenings also fair very well. Obviously you can try different times and see which ones sell better for you, but if you are an international seller it may be worth selling everywhere to capture buyers around the world until you know which days are best.

How long should you list your products for sale

One day listings are only worthwhile for very popular items that people are searching and bidding on all the time (like an iPad) or as a special event (like tickets).

3, 5, 7, 10 days are not very common with eBook resellers on eBay. They all appear to take advantage of the longest listing possible for eBay stores, which is “30 days” or “Goods Till Cancelled”. If you select “Goods Till Cancelled” you still pay every 30 days for a new listing.

How Do You Open An eBay Store?

It has never been easier to open an eBay store, and there are straight forward simple instructions to do so below.

But remember, you will need a Paypal account as eBay now make it compulsory to offer payment by Paypal when you sell on eBay.

eBay have great integration with your Paypal account so if customers have paid for their purchase it shows up in your eBay account in real time. Also, eBay can now integrate your deliveries and tracking numbers straight from most national postal services right into the customers eBay account so they can see their postage details without bothering the eBay seller.

This is for overseas buyers too.

How To Place An Ad On eBay

There are now a few options to place an ad on eBay.

1. Direct onto their website by selecting “Sell” (instructions below)
2. Via your professional eBay Listing Management company (eg. Auctiva)

In order to make a listing on eBay, you simply go to the menu on the top right hand side of any page on eBay and click on “Sell” and the window below will show up when you choose “Sell an item”.

How to Place an Ad on eBay

In the above window, simply type the basic word that describes what you are going to sell on eBay (eg. eBook) and it will then respond with “Books on Disc”. Simply select this category by clicking on the box next to “Books on Disc” and then select “Continue”.

How to Place an Ad on eBay

Don’t forget you can list your item on more than one category, but you will have to pay for extra categories. If you have an audio book then it would be worthwhile considering advertising that book on “Books on Disk” and “Audio Books”.

How to Place an Ad on eBay

Now your listing page will open up, ready for you to fill in.

Keep your title clear, and full of potential “keyword search words” like new, eBook, Disc, etc. Use as many words as possible, even slang words if it’s relevant to your keyword search (eg. Weight Loss, Diet, Low-Fat, Healthy living etc).

Subtitles will not be worth the $2.00 extra charge, so leave that blank.

Select the condition of your item (which should be Brand New), then you need to make sure your “pictures” of your item makes it relevant to the item, and topic, and looks professional.

The best size for your images are not too important as eBay will resize and compress your images to fit the ad. However, the ideal formatting recommended by eBay for your images is:

  • 1600 pixels on the longest side for the best result. The minimum your photos can be without losing quality is 500 pixels on the longest side.
  • You can upload pictures in the following file formats (listed in order of what will give you the best results):

o   JPEG (.jpg file extension)

o   PNG (.png file extension)

o   TIFF (.tif file extension)

o   BMP (.bmp file extension)

Once you are ready, you should upload your photos – up to 12 pictures are for free.

After completing the above choices, simply finish adding your business information like location, postage options and returns information.

On the second page of the listing template you will be required you have entered all the correct information.  If you are happy with your listing you can list it immediately.

Digital Selling Udemy

Selling Digital Content : Udemy and MindBites

Digital Selling Udemy

Udemy

Udemy is still fairly new, but since its launch in 2010 it has gained a solid reputation for being one of the leading online training marketplaces for video training content. The majority of courses are presented in a series of sequential video lessons that are required to complete the entire course.

Udemy is well known for its ease of creating and uploading video course content. You can upload video, documents and graphics as required in order to teach your course and they are all hosted by Udemy at no cost.

Customers come into Udemy and search keywords of a course they want to learn. They then select a course from the course options, they pay the course fee, and then they can stream the course (or download the videos) any time from then on from their Udemy account.

Their settings are saved in their Udemy profile account so they can come and go as much as they please. There is also a space for “chatting” to the teacher who can answer questions posted by students, which all other students can read too.

The benefit of Udemy over other video marketplaces like Mindbites is that it doesn’t cost anything to list your online video course, it is free to upload and host one of your video courses. However, if someone buys your course, then Udemy will keep percentage of the sale price. If you drive that traffic to your course, you earn more money. Affiliates can also sell Udemy courses for a commission.

MindBites

MindBites is also a digital training marketplace where you can upload video courses for consumers to buy and watch on the Mindbites website. You can also embed and sell them directly from your own website or blog.

The main difference with Mindbites from Udemy is that you have to pay to have your course online for people to buy and view (whereas Udemy is free to upload and host your courses). Mindbites has different size accounts depending on the size of your videos, the smaller your online course data, the cheaper it is to host them on Mindbites.

The “free” account with Mindbites will hold up to 250MB of data and any sales made on your account pays Mindbites 35% in commission when a sale is made. But there are larger accounts with more features, and less commission is payable to Mindbites for a higher paid plan.

The video player has a “promo” video size that people can watch which is intended to make the viewer want to purchase the full video at your pre-determined price and like Udemy, Mindbites has an affiliate program that encourages others to sell your video course for you.

You can also upload other documents with your video course for the buyer to receive when they buy your video. You can also put your collection of videos into a “series” to sell as a set. So a customer could just buy one video to do one task, or a collection of videos to learn a whole new skill-set.

Of course there are many more options available like Shopify.com, Paydocom.com, Sellfy.com and Craigslist.com just to name a few. The important thing to keep in mind when it comes to choosing the best platform to offer your digital products on, is to take plenty of time to do your research.

Amazon Marketplace

Mega Marketplace: Amazon.com and Apple

Amazon Marketplace

Amazon

There is no doubt that Amazon is a huge, globally known marketplace. But what for some people don’t realize is that it is a great place for digital product creators to sell their products. Especially since they launched their digital bookstore known as the “Amazon Kindle Store”.

The Kindle Store is the largest online bookstore at the moment, and many people believe it accounts for the majority of all online ebook sales. While it’s hard to verify these figures because it’s against Amazon’s policy to publish actual sales statistics.

When you sell on Amazon you aren’t strictly limited to the Kindle store. You can also create audio books and sell them on Audible.com, their audio bookstore. In fact, if you create both an audio and kindle book with the same title they will combine the two into one sales page for purchasers to see as available in audio or Kindle format.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to selling your digital products on Amazon. Some advantages are the amount of traffic Amazon now receive whereby people will see your digital products for sale when they type in your keywords to the search box. But Amazon also ranks very well for Google SERP, and you can promote an Amazon book (even your own) as an affiliate of Amazon.

You also have the option of becoming an Amazon affiliate. As an affiliate you can promote other peoples products listed in the Amazon marketplace in exchange for a commission. Don’t get too excited though, the Amazon affiliate program doesn’t pay very large commissions on sales and you have to have a high turnover before you are paid, however it is a good idea to go ahead and join to pick up any backend sales from promoting your own products.

Apple

Yes, it is very possible for anyone with the desire to create and sell digital content to offer it on the iTunes marketplaces including in the App Store, the iBookstore and the Mac App Store. All you need to get started selling on iTunes is a registered Apple ID, with a credit card for verification purposes.

As a digital publisher you can take full advantage of the massive of amounts of traffic that the iTunes store receives every day by publishing multiple types of content including:

  • Magazines – Magazines are uploaded with APPS, and customers can subscribe to the magazine (as people can pre-pay for their subscription or it can be free (with ads inside for APP creator to profit). Magazines are sold by Apple from their “Newsstand”.
  • Books – You can sell your eBooks on the iBookstore via “iTunes Connect”. There is a “paid” book account, and a “free” book account, and the free one is quick and easy to join, whereas the “paid” one is more complicated requiring tax and bank details. Free books do not require “ISBN”s, and ISBN’s are optional with the paid books. The iBookstore only accepts “ePub” files and “multi-touch” books. ePub files are easily created with the free online program Callibre, whereby you can upload any format book and it will convert it to ePub for free. To create a multi-touch book you will need to create your book with the Apple iBooks Author Program.
  • Podcasts – You cannot sell a podcast on iTunes, however, it is free to upload your podcast to the iTunes directory.
  • Apps – To sell APPS on Apple you have to first apply to join the iOS Developer Program or Mac Developer Program. All APPS must be accepted by Apple, whereas APPS are all welcome on the Android database.

While it is a little bit more difficult to get started selling on iTunes it can be an extremely profitable platform for the right type of digital content. It’s important to make sure that your product is a good fit for the marketplace you enter and to have an effective marketing strategy in place, because simply listing your product doesn’t guarantee its success.
